Sunshine is located in Central Austin and has been in existence at this location since the early 1980’s. TSBVI allows us to use a portion of their land for our garden for which we are very appreciative. The gardeners grow seasonal vegetables. In this area, there are two gardening seasons.
We have several large compost piles and the nitrogen rich/ moisture laden deliveries by the Compost Pedallers speed up the breakdown process. Additionally, Sunshine believes in recycling and sharing and we are pleased to share our compost with the Compost Pedallers.
We are the largest and oldest Community Garden in Austin, Texas. We also are an entirely volunteer run organization as we have no paid staff. There is a Food Bank Garden that is operated by Sunshine gardeners who grow the food and deliver it to a local food bank. Additionally, we serve as a neighborhood park and as a demonstration garden for vegetable gardeners for visitors. On the first Saturday in March, we hold a very large transplant sale that that provides a wide variety tomatoes and peppers for local gardeners.
I believe that having a group like the Compost Pedallers is a very effective way of spreading the word about the benefits of composting and the value of the finished product.
